The Survey and Report
I carry out any type of survey to meet your needs, and will discuss this fully with you prior to engagement. Normally, surveys are for pre-purchase or insurance, but specific inspections such as osmosis checks, rudder inspections etc… can be arranged.
Typically, a pre-purchase condition survey entails spending a day on the boat and reporting on the condition of:
- the hull (inside and out) including osmosis checks for GRP craft
- bulkheads, frames and supporting structures
- engines, bow thruster
- deck and superstructure
- keels
- stern gear (including sail drives, stern drives and IPS)
- steering equipment
- spars and rig
- sails
- deck fittings and ground tackle
- sea-cocks and skin fittings
- anodes
- windows and hatches
- fuel systems
- electrical and navigation systems
- bilge pumps
- plumbing and gas or cooking systems
- generators
- any other area at your request
Following on from my inspection, I produce a comprehensive report detailing my findings and any repairs and remedial works required. At the end of the survey, you will have a list of works required and the confidence to buy or not buy the boat or to negotiate buying terms. My reports are intended to be easy to read and understand. If you subsequently have any questions or points, I would be pleased to discuss these with you at any time.
Since I have a Diploma of Marine Surveying (Yacht and Small Craft) and am a Graduate Member of the International Institute of Marine Surveyors (IIMS), reports are recognised by leading insurers and lenders, for example Noble Marine Insurance.
My Qualifications & Experience
I take pride in producing detailed surveys that are based on 34 years of yachting experience, boat maintenance and construction knowledge, which, along with observations on the survey date, guide me towards identifying weaknesses and potential failures.
I have trained at the University of Plymouth and have a Diploma of Marine Surveying for Yachts and Small Craft, meaning I have theoretical and practical qualifications as well as surveying experience. I undertake a regular programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), mainly through the IIMS, to ensure I remain up to date and offer you the best service I can. I also have a Degree in Chemistry which included the study of osmosis: I have specific expertise in this area.
As a matter of course, I survey in Cornwall and Devon at locations such as Falmouth, Mylor, Penryn, Flushing, St Mawes, Helford, Fowey, Wadebridge, Padstow, Penzance, Plymouth, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Torbay and Instow, and I am available to survey in other locations on request.
